Job and Wealth Creation Scorecard of his Excellency, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, from 2015 to 2022
- Created 13,510 new youth entrepreneurs from previously unemployed or underemployed youths through skills training, retraining, entrepreneurship training, startup and working capital support.
- Created 223,905 direct jobs arising from skills acquisition, entrepreneurship training, youth empowerment microcredit, livelihood sustenance and public service jobs placement.
- Created 1,325,750 indirect jobs arising from ancillary and multiplier effects of public infrastructure works, public private partnership (PPP) investments, community-level projects and youth empowerment programmes.
The Okowa administration has reduced the poverty level in the state through numerous empowerment and job creation programmes. Women and youths have benefited immensely from the government’s job creation programmes which led to the rating of the state as the second least poor people in the country.
Outlook of Poverty Reduction and Employment Generation in the last Seven Years
- Job and wealth creation through skills acquisition, entrepreneurship development and youth empowerment.
- Massive infrastructural development projects including roads, school buildings, urban facilities, storm drainage and related public works have generated tremendous new employment and incomes.
- Provision of microcredit to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
- Enhancement of agricultural production,agricultural productivity and incomes through value chain development interventions in cassava, rice, aquaculture, oil palm, poultry and vegetables.
- Promotion of trade and commerce through development of inter-city and intra-city road networks coupled with development of urban and rural marketplaces.
- In particular, the development (rehabilitation and construction) of rural roads has opened up the rural areas to greater market access, economic opportunities and employment prospects.
- Attainment of a better business environment by which growth in domestic and foreign investments have improved employment and incomes.
- The significant achievements in sports and phenomenal growth of the hospitality subsector have together increased employment opportunities and incomes to the people.
- The evidence of poverty reduction achievements of the Okowa administration is the fact that Delta State improved from 12th Least Poor State in 2010 to 2nd Least Poor in 2020. This is also corroborated by the GDP figures between 2013 and 2019.
